Leica has redesigned one of its classic lenses for the digital age, launching the Leica Summaron-M 28mm f/5.6 – price tag £1,900.

Leica says the optical design and mechanical construction of the revamped Summaron-M 28mm f/5.6 are identical to its predecessor, which ceased production in 1963.

However, Leica says this is more than just a reconstruction of the old model and the new Leica lens incorporates new optical developments to bring it up to date.

The new Leica Summaron-M f/5.6 measures less than 2cm in length and features six elements in four groups arranged symmetrically around the iris of the lens.

The exterior of the new Leica Summaron-M 28mm f/5.6 has been updated to feature Leica’s M bayonet mount with 6-bit coding. The company has also revamped the shape of the focusing lock button, the diameter of the aperture ring and the style of the knurling on the barrel and rings.

The hood is machined from solid brass and is included with the lens.

Available only by pre-order, the Leica Summaron-M 28mm f/5.6 price tag will be £1,900 including VAT.
