Is Ricoh hinting at a Pentax Q revival, new 645 in 2019

All I want for Christmas is a Pentax Mirrorless camera

Ricoh/Pentax has (possibly, indirectly) suggested that a new Pentax Q mirrorless camera, as well as an update to the medium format 645 range, could come in 2019.

In an interview with the Japanese magazine Nippon Camera, Ricoh/Pentax representatives point out that 2019 is the 100th anniversary of the optical company that was the precursor to Pentax and ‘merely putting a 100-year logo on products’ isn’t enough to celebrate the event.

Speaking about the Q mirrorless range Pentax launched earlier this decade, the spokesperson said it has not been discontinued. According to a translation of the interview, the spokesperson said:

Q has been highly valued for it’s compact size by core users. They are looking at the situation with the Q, and it is not accurate to say development in discontinued. (I think this should be taken with a pinch of salt, because in Japan, Q bodies are only available from Ricoh direct, some shops list the lenses as “production ended”, and that macro disappeared from the roadmap)

Regarding 645, the next model is currently being considered. 645 is a very important product to the company and they are not stopping the line.

The interview also went on to discuss the growth in full-frame and medium format mirrorless systems, but Ricoh seems resolute that they are ‘more interested in serving our customers than following trends.’
