Invitation hints at quad camera for Honor 20

Smartphone manufacturer, Honor has sent invitations to its launch event in London on 21st May which seems to hold a few clues about the camera we can expect to see on the Honor 20 mobile phone.

Honor is a sub-brand of Huawei, which recently announced the Huawei P30 Pro. This top-end smartphone performed very well in our review with its quad camera set-up capturing an impressive level of detail. What really amazes us about this smartphone camera system, however, is its ability to mimic the shallow depth of field effects of shooting at wide apertures with large sensor cameras.

This smart technology is enabled by analysis of the information from the multiple cameras. We’ve seen this before with two and three camera arrangements, but the Huawei P30 Pro has four cameras with one of them being a ‘Time of Flight’ (TOF) camera.

This works a bit like a sonar unit for light, and it gathers data about the distance to objects in the scene. That’s useful information for calculating the appropriate degree of blur to apply to different parts of the image. It helps the P30 Pro produce natural looking images where subjects don’t seem cut out or have strange artefacts around them.

So what has this got to do with the Honor 20?

Good question. The invitation for the Honor 20 series launch shows a strange series of fours. It was only when you clicked on this that the date of the event was revealed – 21st May. We think those fours are a hint about what we’ll see.

Another clue is the hashtag, #CaptureWonder which suggests that the camera and photography are key areas for the phone.

Our bet is that the Honor 20 has a quad camera system. It may not be exactly the same camera system as the Huawei P30 Pro, which is developed in partnership with Leica, but it’s likely that a lot of the research is shared.

It could mean that the Honor 20 has a TOF camera which will up the Honor-line’s portrait-shooting game.

That’s good news if you’re contemplating upgrading your phone and you’ve been hovering over the order button for a Huawei P30 Pro, but feeling anxious about the price. And you don’t have to wait much longer to hear what the Honor 20 has to offer.

We’ll be at the Honor 20 launch in London on 21st May, and we’ll report back as soon as we can. As ever, photography is our key focus.
