Insta360 has announced the ONE R – price tag starting at $299.99 – a new modular, adaptive 360 action camera that boasts a 5.3K 1-inch sensor and can mount to your drone.
The Insta360 ONE R features an interchangeable lens design, which allows users to swap lenses for different functionality by mounting different ‘mods’.
The core unit consists of a battery and processor, with a Dual-Lens 360 Mod, a 4K Wide-angle Mod and a 1-inch Wide-range Mod that was developed in partnership with Leica.
The 1-inch Mod employs the bigger sensor to record video at 5.3K resolution and capture 19-megapixel stills. Leica also worked with Insta360 on the optical engineering and design of this Mod.
The 4K Wide-angle Mod captures 4K video at 60fps, with up to 8x slow motion playback. Another interesting feature of the 4K Mod is that it has a reversible design that allows you to flip the touchscreen from back to front for those moments when you want to film yourself.
The Dual-Lens 360 Mod supports 5.7K capture and real-time 360-degree preview on the ONE R’s touchscreen. This Mod also includes Insta360’s Night Shot mode, HDR video and Color Plus.
Insta360 has developed new AI technology for the ONE R that uses an algorithm to ascertain the best parts of your 360 videos. Auto Frame mode then recommends this angle and will reframe the scene for a traditional video format.
Another new AI mode, Deep Track, allows users – either in real-time or in post-production – to track a selected subject within a 360 video. Using the voice command ‘Mark that,’ the camera will lock on to a subject and automatically reframe the shot to follow this subject when viewing your content later on the computer.
Does the Insta360 ONE R have voice control?
Yes, you can control the ONE R with a set of voice commands. This enables you to start and stop recording when wearing the ONE R, for instance, on a helmet or mounted to your bike.
Is the Insta360 ONE R waterproof?
Yes, the Insta360 ONE R has a rating of IPX8 and is waterproof down to depths of 5 metres, or 16.4 feet. If you want to go deeper with the camera, you can buy a Dive Case, sold separately, that allows you to take the ONE R down to depths of 60 metres, or 197 feet.
The ONE R comes with Insta360’s flagship FlowState image stabilisation. A new Night Shot mode promises to use automatic de-noising to reveal detail in shadows.
Color Plus allows users to make automatic colour grading with one touch.
What’s more, the Insta360 ONE R also comes with two on-board mics and an automatic wind-reduction algorithm.
You can also buy a top-mounting Accessory Shoe that allows you to connect a standard 3.5mm microphone.
Other new modes include a Starlapse mode for timelapses of the night sky. This joins the TimeShift hyper lapse mode and Bullet Time effects introduced with the ONE X.
FlashCut is the ONE R app’s content-aware editing algorithm which finds shots based on a theme set by the user.
The Insta360 ONE R’s modular design means you can attach different Mods for different functionality. An Aerial Mod, for instance, allows you to attach the ONE R to your drone for an aerial 360-degree view.
As well as the Accessory Shoe there is also a Boosted Battery Base, which you can attach for extended shooting.
