Huawei has announced its new flagship phone for 2018, introducing the Mate 10 Pro, which boasts Leica Summilux-H lenses on its dual cameras.

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro is the first product to launch from the Huawei-Leica optical partnership that was announced earlier this year. Naturally, the Huawei Mate 10 Pro’s dual cameras each work in partnership with a Leica Summilux-H lens that offer an equivalent focal length of 27mm and a maximum aperture of f/1.6.

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro also employs two different image sensors behind its Leica lenses: one 12-megapixel sensor with an RGB filter and a 20-megapixel sensor that records monochrome.

As we point out in our Huawei Mate 10 Pro camera review, Leica has a history or using a monochrome sensor without an RGB colour filter, as the camera is able to capture greater detail and record a wider dynamic range.

With the dual sensors, the Huawei Mate 10 Pro will merge images to produce photos with much more detail.

Other features of the Huawei Mate 10 Pro camera include a raw capture, 4x hybrid digital zoom capability, +/-4EV exposure compensation, a max ISO of 3200 and a shutter speed range from 30secs to 1/4000sec.

It’s also worth noting that while the Huawei Mate 10 Pro doesn’t offer a microSD card slot (however the Mate 10 does), the phone does boast 128GB of internal storage.

A new Kirin 970 processing engine also promises faster operation. In fact, Huawei says the Mate 10 Pro can recognise 2005 objects a minute and is 5x faster at this recognition than the iPhone 7 Plus (and twice the speed of the iPhone 8 Plus).
