Having been a finalist several times in previous years, food photographer and filmmaker Carl Pendle scooped the unearthed® Food Film Shorts crown in 2016 with his film ‘Chilli Festival.’

From the three films, which Carl submitted into the competition, he says that Chilli Festival was the easiest to put together. The others required a lot more conceptual work and were more Avant-garde, proving you never know what is going to capture the judge’s imagination; they obviously connected with that particular film.

“You need to tell a compelling story, viewers should have an emotional response to it.”

Carl had no specific techniques for creating his award-winning food film short, Chilli Festival, it simply made people laugh. But equally the content of your film could document a charity, or how to bake a particular bread or cake, showcasing both the disasters and successes. The opportunities are endless. Be creative.
