How to shoot at high frame rates with the Panasonic Lumix G90 / G95

//

Slow motion video is created by shooting at a high frame rate and then playing the images back at a normal rate. For example, the standard playback speed in PAL regions is 25fps (frames per second). If you shoot a video at a frame rate of 100fps and play it back at 25fps, the video will be 4x slower and longer than normal. As a result, any movement in the video is slowed down.

High frame rate video is popular for action because it gives a sense of drama. It’s great for things like a trick on a skateboard or tennis serve because it lets you see something that normally takes place in a split second.

It’s also handy when you don’t have much time to grab a shot because just a few seconds becomes long enough for a whole clip. And it also slows down the jitter and wobble of handheld video, which can be useful.

The Panasonic Lumix G90, known as the Lumix G95 in the US allows you to shoot at a range of frame rates. However, the fastest frame rate in the standard video settings is 60p. That only gives you about 2.5x slow-motion playback.

Here’s to shoot at a higher frame rate:

How to shoot at high frame rates with the Panasonic Lumix G90 / G95

  1. Turn the mode dial to the Creative Video setting. If the camera isn’t in this mode, you can’t access the menu settings you need.

  2. Press the menu button and in the top tab, select High Speed Video before pressing the Menu/Set button.

  3. The fastest frame rate available is 120fps, this gives you almost 5x slow-motion playback at 25fps. That’s ideal for lots of situations. The great thing about shooting at this frame rate is that you don’t have to slow the video right down, so you have some flexibility. However, if you prefer, there are slower frame rates including 100, 90, 75, 60 and 50fps, all in the Full HD resolution.

  4. Once you’ve selected the option you want, the camera will record video at that frame rate whenever the mode dial is set to Creative Video mode and you press the record button. If the camera is in another exposure mode, the G90/G95 will record in the resolution that is set via the Record Quality setting of the normal video menu tab.

Using High Speed Video Mode

Bear in mind that the G90 / G95 controls the exposure in High Speed Video mode. That means you can’t set the aperture, shutter speed or sensitivity (ISO). However, you can adjust the exposure using the exposure compensation control.

When you’re shooting at a high frame rate, it’s also important to remember that the camera records a lot more data. That means the memory card fills up much more quickly. So take a spare or two just in case.
