Has the Nikon 1 system been quietly discontinued?

Nikon 1 J5 firmware update fixes image deletion bug

Last year we wrote about a report from a German publication that Nikon 1 cameras were being discontinued at retailers throughout the country.

An examination of retailers show that only the Nikon 1 J5 and Nikon AW1 remained available for sale.

A year later, and Nikon Rumors reports that one of America’s biggest retailers, B&H Photo Video, is no longer selling any Nikon 1 cameras or lenses.

Nikon Rumors points out that the retailer is out of stock on all Nikon 1 cameras, and it only lists one lens, the Nikkor 32mm f/1.2, as in stock.

At America’s other big photo retailer, Adorama, again, little is in stock: some J5 cameras and a few Nikon 1 lenses.

The report also follows a comment on a DPReview thread that sparked a lively discussion about the Nikon 1 range. According to the reader:

The annual trade photo show is taking place at the main camera store here in Regina, Canada. At the Nikon booth, there were no Nikon 1 cameras, lenses or accessories (like last year, too). When I asked the rep, “What’s happening with Nikon 1?” His reply was:

“(Shoulder shrug) There won’t be anything new. We’ve introduced the last of the Nikon 1 bodies.”

I asked, “There are no lenses on the shelves, either. Does that mean that if there are no more lenses then the system is discontinued?”

He replied, “Well, it’s not officially discontinued yet.”
