GoPro has announced a major firmware update for its Fusion camera, which now enables the 360 camera to capture video at 5.8K resolution at 24fps, along with a slew of other new features and enhancements.

GoPro Fusion firmware v2.0 enables the camera to capture 5.8K video which, when stitched, produces 5.6K spherical footage. There’s also a new 5.6K time-lapse mode at 24fps, as well as longer intervals for the Fusion’s night and time-lapse modes.

For stills, there’s new support for raw capture in the Fusion’s night and time-lapse modes, with intervals of 5 seconds or longer.

The GoPro Fusion firmware release is part of a new public beta program for the Fusion, as well as its Fusion Studio companion software and Fusion Adobe plug-ins.

Among the new additions to Fusion Studio v1.4 in the beta period are:

  • Adds 5.6K exports for the new higher resolution 24fps mode.
  • Adds support for importing time lapse photo from sub-folder folders, when using Adobe Lightroom rendered GPR RAW time/night lapse sequences.
  • Adds a preference control to import long videos in separate chapters for faster imports.
  • Adds support for importing Fusion clips without .LRV files.
  • Improved stabilization quality for all modes (particularly for 24fps).
  • Improved stitch quality for videos with large exposure differences between front and back lenses.
  • Enhanced image processing to improve outputs for all modes.

The Fusion beta also updates GoPro’s VR plug-ins for use with Adobe Premiere CC 2019 and Adobe After Effects CC 2019.

If you’ve followed our coverage of the Fusion over the past year, you’ll know that we’ve loved the camera but felt it was let down by its software. So these updates to Fusion Studio, in particular, could really transform the user experience. We’ll be testing these in the coming days.
