GoPro has announced an upgrade to its budget-friendly HERO action camera, enhancing its video capabilities with a new 4K 4:3 aspect ratio setting and a SuperView Digital Lens option. The update, available for free via the GoPro app, expands the camera’s immersive shooting potential, making it an even more attractive option for first-person perspectives and social media content.

The 4:3 aspect ratio allows users to capture more of their surroundings by utilising the full height and width of the camera’s sensor. This setting is particularly useful for dynamic action shots, selfies, and social media-friendly vertical footage. Additionally, users can crop 4:3 footage into a 16:9 format for a traditional widescreen look.

The new SuperView Digital Lens option further enhances the HERO’s capabilities by converting ultra-wide 4:3 footage into an even wider 16:9 format. This feature, previously available only in higher-end GoPro models, provides an expansive field of view, adding an intense sense of speed and immersion to action-packed footage.

GoPro CEO Nicholas Woodman expressed excitement about the update, stating, “The new, tiny HERO camera is so small and lightweight, you forget it’s there. It’s brilliant for everyone from kids to experienced GoPro users looking for the ultimate miniature ultra-wide-angle camera.”

The HERO has already gained widespread acclaim, with The New York Times Wirecutter calling it “the best budget-friendly action camera.” CBS News highlighted its affordability, while ZD Net praised its balance of ruggedness, stabilised 4K video, and versatility. We’ll bring you our full review of the GoPro Hero very soon along with this update.

With this latest update, GoPro continues to refine its entry-level action camera, ensuring that it remains a top choice for those seeking high-quality footage at an affordable price.
