GoPro Fusion Overcapture mode

OverCapture

Calling it the ‘evolution in storytelling,’ GoPro has also introduced a feature called OverCapture. What this does is allow users to film all of a scene in spherical 360 video. From this footage you can then select your desired perspective and save it as a new video in normal video format.

The OverCapture mode will enable users to make traditional 16:9 videos in 1080p resolution from their 360 videos, with full control of the perspective. This is something we saw just recently introduced with the Insta360 ONE, so we’ll be very keen to see GoPro’s version of the feature.

Effects modes

The GoPro Fusion will also offer a range of pre-set effects that will be added via an update to the GoPro app in early 2018 (along with OverCapture). Among these are an ‘Angel View’ perspective where the Fusion appears like it is flying in front of you… like an angel. This is achieved by mounting the Fusion on an extension pole that isn’t visible in the 360 footage.

Again, this is something Insta360 also introduced with the ONE, so it will be interesting to see how both manufacturer’s systems compare.

Another interesting effect is Panel Flow, which GoPro says takes the complexity out of panning with a subject.

And the fan-favourite Tiny Planet view will also be an option on the GoPro Fusion.

QuikStories

The GoPro Fusion is also equipped with the company’s QuikStories feature that automatically generates videos based on your images and video clips.

Like the GoPro Hero5 Black, the GoPro Fusion will also be waterproof up to 16 feet without a housing. The Fusion will also be compatible with the Remo waterproof voice-activated remote designed for the Hero5 Black.

Voice Commands

The GoPro Fusion will also offer voice control for hands-free operation much like its siblings in the Hero5 range and the new GoPro Hero6 Black.

Some of the rumoured voice commands were rumoured to be ‘GoPro Highlight’ or ‘That was sick’, which will allow users to mark highlights in your videos shot with the Fusion. We’ve yet to see a full list of the GoPro Fusion’s voice commands, but will confirm this later.

Certainly, adding voice control to a 360 camera is something that will really set the Fusion apart. You will also be able to mark highlights by pressing a button on the camera’s body.

The Fusion will also incorporate GoPro’s Protune mode, allowing you to set limits on your sensitivity and exposure compensation.

When the Fusion is in standby mode, a QuikCapture function will automatically wake the camera up when you press the shutter button and begin recording immediately. If you keep holding down the shutter button in Quikcapture, the Fusion will record a timelapse.

Other features are said to include three microphones, loop recording, GPS location tagging and an intervalometer for timelapses, with intervals from 0.5secs up to 60secs.

Interestingly, the manual posted online said the GoPro Fusion will boast two micro SD card slots, which Ty suggests means each of the camera’s lenses uses a dedicated card and that there is likely no in-camera stitching.

GoPro Fusion Price

We now know that the GoPro Fusion price tag will be £699 in the UK. The GoPro Fusion price tag in the United States is $699.

It’s worth noting that the Yi 360 VR camera, which also offers 5.7K video, is priced $399.

GoPro Fusion Release Date

GoPro didn’t announce a formal GoPro Fusion release date in its live broadcast, however during the speeches we nipped over to GoPro’s website and noticed it had already published its Fusion product page. In the fine print there it says a GoPro Fusion release date will be on or before 30 November 2017 for EU countries.
