Google has announced a low-price version of its Pixel smartphone, the Pixel 3a, which drops the second front camera but regains a headphone jack.

The Google Pixel 3a price tag is £399 – about half the cost of the Pixel 3 – and makes a few cuts to the feature set and design to make it more affordable.

Along with dropping the second selfie camera, the Pixel 3a loses wireless charging, trades a metal body for plastic and uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 670 processor rather than the 854 chip.

There’s also a new Pixel 3a XL, priced £469, which is 6-inches compared to the Pixel 3 XL’s 6.3-inch display.

But rather than focus on what it lacks, the Pixel 3 is on our list of the best phones for photos for a reason, and much of the same camera tech can be found in the Pixel 3a.

The rear camera boasts the same 12.2-megapixel sensor with a fast f/1.8 and dual pixel AF. On the front you have the 8-megapixel sensor with an f/2 lens.

Back are Google’s Night Sight and Portrait modes, the former which challenges Huawei’s Night Mode for low-light excellence. Motion Auto Focus is designed for getting pin-sharp group shots.

Battery life is said to be 13 days on standby or 32 hours of talk time. You also get 64GB of internal storage and a FHD+ 5.6-inch display.

In the UK you can get the Google Pixel 3a at £50 off the RRP. In the US the Pixel 3a is available from Best Buy and other retailers.
