Google has launched an Android version of its popular Motion Still app, allowing users to record video within the app.

The Android version marks a slight change from the iOS app launched last year, where the app stabilises your Live Photos and turns them into gifs.

In Motion still for Android you record your videos within the app, which applies stabilisation as you record it with no internet connection required, Google says. This means your videos can be shared instantly.

Other new features include the ability to film stabilised timelapse and hyperlapse videos, and Google has increase the playback speed to 8x from 1x on the iOS version.

To make the latter possible, Google says it encodes videos with a denser I-frame spacing to enable efficient seeking and playback.

“We also employ additional optimizations in the Fast Forward mode,” Google says on its blog. “For instance, we apply adaptive temporal downsampling in the linear solver and long-range stabilization for smooth results over the whole sequence.”

You can also now output your Motion Still gifs in three different sizes.

Motion Still for Android is available on the Google Play store for devices running Android 5.1 or later.
