The 2016 World Press Photo Exhibition has returned to London’s Southbank Centre, offering a free display of winning images from the 59th annual contest.

The 2016 World Press Photo Exhibition will debut in the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall on 4 November and run until 21 November.

This year the contest was won by Australian photographer Warren Richardson, who’s winning image captures refugees crossing the border from Serbia into Hungary.

The image, taken at night, depicts a father and child who were trying to cross over before a secure fence was installed on the border.

Richardson says: “I camped with the refugees for five days on the border. A group of about 200 people arrived, and they moved under the trees along the fence line. They sent women and children, then fathers and elderly men first.

“I must have been with this crew for about five hours and we played cat and mouse with the police the whole night. I was exhausted by the time I took the picture. It was around three o’clock in the morning and you can’t use a flash while the police are trying to find these people, because I would just give them away. So I had to use the moonlight alone.”

Some 82,951 images were entered into the World Press Photo competition this year by 5,775 photographers from 128 countries.

Below you can see a gallery of all of the winning and commended images from World Press Photo 2016. The exhibition runs daily from 10am to 11pm. Visit the Southbank Centre website for more information.
