G-Technology G Drive Mobile USB-C Review

News

Solid state drives, more commonly know as SSDs are great but they’re still pretty pricy. Hard drives make a more affordable alternative but they sometimes lack a little style. Not so the G-Technology G Drive Mobile USB-C. This little beauty looks perfectly at home alongside your flash new MacBook.

Those slick looks are matched by a durable feel thanks to the brushed aluminium case and high-quality cables. Helpfully, it’s supplied with both USB-C and USB-A cables so you can connect it to the latest Mac computers as well as older models.

What’s more, it’s available in capacities of 1TB, 2TB or 4TB, so you’ve got plenty of room for storing all your image from a long trip or 4K video.

The drive’s USB-C connection is also Thunderbolt 3 compatible and it delivers transfer rates of up to 140MB/s.

Aimed at Mac users, the G-Technology G Drive Mobile USB-C is formatted for use with Macs. However, it can be reformatted for use with Windows machines.

Once it’s connected via the right cable, you can transfer files quickly to the drive. Naturally, achieving the fastest transfer times requires the latest computer connections, but even with a 2016 MacBook Pro and a USB-A style connection, you’re not hanging around for long. Swap to a more recent MacBook with a USB-C connection and your images seem to fly across.

Verdict

At less than £140/$140 for the 4TB version, it’s easy to see the appeal of the G-Technology G Drive Mobile USB-C. Even better, it doesn’t look or act like a low-cost drive and it comes with Western Digital’s 3-year warranty.

If you’re looking for extra storage, this is a great solution.
