Fujifilm has announced the GFX 50S II, price tag £3,499 / $3,999, an update to its compact, lightweight, 51.4MP mirrorless medium format camera.
Priced under £3,500 / $4,000 for the body only, the Fujifilm GFX 50S II is one of the most affordable mirrorless medium format cameras you can buy. Inside it boasts a 51.4-megapixel large format sensor, which records 1.7x more light per pixel than a full-frame sensor.
This enables the camera to capture not only a wide dynamic range and high signal-to-noise ratio, but very shallow depth of field effects that can give images a three-dimensional feel.
The GFX 50S II is powered by Fujifilm’s X-Processor 4 processing engine and a revamped autofocus algorithm for more precise operation.
The GFX 50S II also boasts five-axis in-body image stabilisation, also known as IBIS, that provides up to 6.5 stops of compensation. This means that despite the high resolution you can shoot handheld in many situations. In this new model Fujifilm has structured the camera’s gyro sensor to boost its accuracy in detecting motion.
For even higher resolution images, Fujifilm’s Pixel Shift Multi-Shot function allows GFX 50S II users to create 200-megapixel images by using the camera’s IBIS to shift the image sensor by 0.5 pixels to incrementally record 16 raw images and combine them into a single raw file.
The Fujifilm GFX 50S II’s body design also sets it apart. Despite its large sensor, the camera weighs just 900g and measures 104.2mm high by 87.2mm deep. Fujifilm has reshaped the grip to make it more comfortable when shooting with large lenses, and added thickness around the base of the lens mount, is designed to make it more robust and easier to hold.
The GFX 50S II is also weather-sealed at 60 locations around the camera’s body, and it can operate in temperatures down to -10C.

The Fujifilm GFX 50S II price tag is £3,499 / $3,999 for the body only. The price rises to £3,899 / $4,499 for the GFX 50S II and GF35-70mm F4.5-5.6 WR lens bundle.
Fujifilm says the GFX 50S II release date will be in late September 2021.
