Fujifilm has announced the GF50mm f/3.5 R LM WR, price tag £949, for use with its medium format GFX cameras.

A nifty 50 is a must-have focal length even with the upscaled GFX large format system. This new compact 50mm is the lightest lens in the GF range at just 335g.

Ensuring that it gives you the best possible creative scope, it features a maximum aperture of f/3.5. As this lens is designed for use on the large format system, that 50mm equates to 40mm in the 35mm film format.

The GFX cameras aren’t known for being compact. However, considering the sensor size and resolution, they’re far more slimline than the majority of other large format cameras. This makes them an excellent choice for street and travel photography as well as in the studio.

The new 50mm attached to the GFX 50R has a combined weight of 1,110g which makes this the lightest and most travel-friendly GFX kit yet.

Taking a look at the anatomy of the lens, and it features nine elements in six groups with one aspherical lens element. This all helps to minimise the effects of aberration and distortion.

Video capability is now as crucial as stills, and here the 50mm has low breathing, which makes it ideal for capturing footage while out on your adventures.

Size and weight of the kit is always an important consideration from the moment you step out of the studio. Here the new 50mm f/3.5 is not only lightweight, 335g, for this class of lens but at Φ84 x 84mm its relatively compact.

Inside the mechanics are powered by linear motors, these enable the slimline outer for the lens and allow fast, accurate and silent focusing.

Designed for travel, you’d expect the lens to living up to any inclement weather it will be exposed to. Here Fujifilm has made sure the lens is sealed, making it dust and weather resistant and well able to withstand temperatures down to -10ºC.

The lens will be available from mid-September 2019 with an RRP of £949. For more details check out fujifilm.eu/uk
