Scientists working for Facebook have developed an AI that will automatically replace closed eyes with open ones when you blink in photos.
In a long paper that you’re unlikely to read, let alone understand, Facebook’s researchers explain that they effectively trained the AI to understand how people’s eyes look by providing it with pictures of people’s eyes when they were open.
The AI was then able to ascertain a person’s eye shape and colour. Then, when the same person closed their eyes in a photograph, the AI could recognise the closed eye and generate open eyes based on its understanding of that person’s face.
Adobe announced a similar technology not long ago, but its quality was questionable. Facebook appears to have made a real breakthrough, though, with its new technology.
Facebook gave no hint of when it might roll out this technology, but we can only imagine that at the rate AI technology is developing that it won’t be too long.
