Our Verdict

The YOOYAA DR.Q projector is an incredibly affordable option for those in need of a basic video projector. The brightness is decent enough for the price, and the projection is clear and crisp with a resolution of 1280p.

In use the projected image was decent enough at distances up to 3m, but it is slightly underpowered for daylight presentations without blinds drawn. But then, at this price, the YOOYAA DR.Q is still far brighter than many of its similarly priced products.

What’s more, when it comes to connection options, there are plenty, including HDMI, USB and MicroSD options which gives you loads of options for projecting your images or video files.

There is a built-in speaker but this is very much on the quiet side, so your’re best to consider an external audio option instead. However, if you’re just reviewing images, then the audio isn’t an issue.

Ultimately, you have to keep coming back to the price, which isn’t a great deal for what you get. As a cheap way to project images and video, there’s little to fault.

Build and Handling

The YOOYAA DR.Q projector feels a bit plasticky, but it is decent enough for the price point. The focus ring is crude but effective, and the tilt control for verticals is limited, so it is important to position the projector at the correct height on a table or tripod.

There’s a 1/4-inch thread on the base of the projector, which is a nice touch, making it easy to mount on a tripod if needed. The direct controls are simple and easy to understand, and the remote control makes adjustments even easier.

Delving into the menus and there’s quick access options for video, images and music with icons that bare more than a passing resemblance to Apple’s. Click on any of the selected and you’re taken through to the playback options if the right media is attached which is handy for viewing images stored on a USB.

Different inputs are all easily selected from the menu a quick click on the input menu and options such as HDMI can be selected so you can instantly start projecting from your laptop or other HDMI enabled device.

Performance

The setup of the YOOYAA DR.Q projector is surprisingly easy. Simply plug it into the mains and connect it to the computer via HDMI or VGA, then switch the source and start projecting. The projector is small and lightweight, making it easy to position on a table or tripod. The tripod option is a nice touch using the 1/4-inch thread on the base.

Once powered on the bulb packs a decent punch, and the image is bright enough to be seen even on dull days. However, it is slightly underpowered for daylight presentations without blinds drawn. Checking the brightness at 1m distance with a few images and the brightness averaged out at around 120 Lux falling to 65 Lux at the edge. Using the blue menu screen at full brightness and it measured 250 lux at 1m and 50lux at 3m again with fall-off towards the edges. The quality of the projection is actually very good.

While the resolution of the projector is not high enough for high-quality image review, it is suitable for basic projection needs, such as showing images to a group of people for fun and review of photographic work at a club or through lessons.

The colour and contrast are surprisingly good for the price point. However, for high-quality video presentations or sensitive image review, this projector may not be the best option.

Watching back video and again the projector does the job, colours are good and there’s a decent representation of tonal graduation. The video projection quality is way above what I expected at this price, but still, you do need to consider that this is a sub £100 projector, so it does have its limitations.

The biggest limitation is with the sound which is quite tinny and quiet. Howwever, there’s audio in as well as out so external speakers can be hooked in if needed.

Overall performance is surprisingly good, and at this price it offers great versatility. As well as being used as it’s primary function of being an image and video projector it also proved useful as a creative tool for projecting images onto objects for a creative photography shoot.

Final thoughts

The YOOYAA DR.Q projector is a great option for photographers who need a basic and affordable projector for presentations or image review. It is incredibly cheap and offers decent enough brightness, making it a great value for the money. The image is clear and crisp at its 1280 resolution when lights are fully out, and it has a good projection distance with a decent image at 3 meters.

While it may be slightly underpowered for daylight presentations without blinds drawn, this is to be expected at this price point. The built-in speaker is quite decent, but the limited tilt adjustment for the lens can be a challenge for finding the right height of the table to position it.

YOOYAA DR.Q review

The YOOYAA DR.Q projector is built with plastic materials, which are of a quality that matches the price point. The focus ring is crude but effective, and the tilt control for verticals is limited. The direct controls are simple enough and made easier with the remote.

Overall, the YOOYAA DR.Q projector is a great option for photographers looking for an affordable projector to review images or give presentations. Where it’s not so great is when image quality review is essential as the colour and tone are really set for entertainment rather than high-end image display. The projector is easy to set up, offers decent brightness, and a range of connection options that make it a great value for the price. It may not be the highest quality projector out there, but for its price, it is a solid choice.
