The new Huawei P20 Pro camera has been named the best smartphone camera on the market for image and video quality by DxOMark, as well as a ‘game changer’ for phone photography.
The image quality experts gave the Huawei P20 Pro an impressive total photo score of 114, which is the highest score of any smartphone camera by quite some margin.
In particular DxOMark lauded the P20 Pro’s exposure capabilities, colour rendition and AF performance, along with its ability to control noise and artifacts.
DxOMark also said the P20 Pro is the best smartphone for using flash.
For video, the Huawei P20 Pro earned a score of 98, again making it the top smartphone camera in that category as well.
DxOMark says the P20 Pro’s video performance is excellent across the board, singling out its electronic video stabilisation, which bests the Google Pixel 2 and enables users to take smooth videos while walking.
DxOMark writes in its conclusion:
We are used to every new smartphone camera generation being slightly better than the previous one, but looking at the images and test results from the P20 Pro, it seems Huawei has skipped one or two generations. The results are simply that good. The P20 Pro’s triple camera setup is the biggest innovation we have seen in mobile imaging for quite some time and is a real game changer.
Being able to pick the best camera for a specific shooting situation and computationally merge the image data from all three sensors means that the new Huawei beats the competition in virtually every category, taking the number one spots in both our Photo and Video rankings.
