How to Dodge and Burn in Photoshop

//

Dodging and burning in Photoshop is one of the photo editing techniques many new photographers struggle to get right.

Photoshop’s traditional Dodge and Burn tools use a destructive editing process and can over-saturate the colours in your images.

However, as Youtuber Jimmy McIntyre points out in this video tutorial, there are a variety ways to dodge and burn in Photoshop that offer a non-destructive workflow and better results.

Using a mixture of blend modes, the paint brush and masks, and combining a white or black paint brush with a layer that has a blend mode set to Overlay or Soft Light, McIntyre shows how to dodge and burn in Photoshop to achieve cleaner results.

What’s more, you can even download Jimmy’s actions from this tutorial for free from his website!
