DJI will begin improving its geofencing technology across Europe, rolling out what it’s calling the Geospatial Environment Online (GEO) 2.0 system.

GEO 2.0 creates what DJI calls ‘bow tie’ safety zones around runway flight paths and employs polygon shapes around other sensitive facilities. In the past, DJI’s original GEO system created circles around such locations.

DJI says the new system better reflects the actual safety risks posed in those areas and is more flexbile in lower-risk areas, for example by permitting authorised users to conduct drone activities in locations parallel to runways.

The revamp of DJI’s GEO system will also include Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) imposed during major events or natural disasters. The TFRs will be based on authoritative data from Eurocontrol.

GEO 2.0 will start rolling out later this month. DJI users will need to update their GO 4 flight app and aircraft firmware in order to install the new system.
