DJI has added new flight features to the DJI Spark via a firmware update, while first shipments of the company’s new mini drone reached customers this week.

Launched last month, the DJI Spark is a portable drone about the size of a soda can that you can control via hand gestures and is aimed at first-time drone users.

DJI is advising new Spark owners to immediately upgrade the drone’s firmware to add a slew of new features the company has developed based on early feedback.

New enhancements from the Spark’s firmware update include more flexibility by recognising the selfie gesture right after launching the aircraft from the palm when most of the pilot’s body appears in the frame.

The DJI Spark firmware upgrade also adds more ways to control Spark’s flight via the DJI GO 4 app on a mobile device.

Based on feedback from early reviewers, the new DJI Spark firmware upgrade allows Spark pilots using mobile devices to adjust the maximum distance it will fly in some of the QuickShot intelligent flight modes – from 30 feet (10 meters) up to 160 feet (50 meters) in Rocket mode, 200 feet (60 meters) in Dronie and 250 feet (75 meters) in Helix mode.

First shipments of the Spark have been posted out to its first wave of customers, which includes retailers and people who pre-ordered the DJI drone.

DJI says the Spark can launch within seconds and is able to shoot 12-megapixel photos and stabilised 1080p videos via its two-axis mechanical gimbal. The DJI Spark also employs an obstacle sensing system and automated flight modes.
