DJI has announced the OM 5, a new compact mobile phone gimbal stabiliser, price tag £139 / €159 which adopts a new design and adds new features.
The new DJI OM 5 reworks the familiar Osmo Mobile design with an upgraded phone clamp, built-in extension rod and is smaller and lighter than previous models.
To ensure that you capture the smoothest video possible, the new OM 5 is based around the now-familiar 3-axis design that uses the company’s industry-leading technology.
As well as the hardware, DJI has also heavily invested in the usability of its Mimo app, with a host of new features that will open up filmmaking to all users.
ShotGuides is a new feature that will appeal to new and experienced users alike, with video guides that help you construct engaging movies. ActiveTrack 4.0 has also been enhanced, making it far easier for you to film yourself and stay in the frame.
Appealing to the consumer market, there are two new colour options: Sunset White and Athens Grey.
“With the iterations of the DJI OM smartphone stabilisers over the years, we have been aiming to lower the threshold of professional and high-quality shooting by offering users more accessible and helpful tools for their everyday activities,” said Paul Pan, Senior Product Line Manager at DJI. “For those who rely on their smartphones, the DJI OM 5 is your ultimate compact, technologically advanced gimbal – any time you want to create footage of your most memorable moments.”
DJI has upgraded the design of Osmo Mobile to ensure that the OM 5 is more convenient to transport and use than any previous model. The company is pushing this as the device that you use to vlog your everyday activities, document family adventures, or even make video calls on the move.
The OM 5 is more convenient, smaller and more compact when folded and unfolded. Packed down, the new stabiliser is as small as the palm of your hand, while unfolded is large enough to hold most mainstream smartphones and will hold the same payload as the previously larger models.
This model of Osmo Mobile is the first to incorporate a built-in extension rod, giving you greater flexibility over the types of shots and angles you can capture. This new rod extends to 215mm and enables you to capture more engaging selfies.
As ever, the grip features a series of direct controls enabling you to quickly change the camera’s orientation, flip it around from POV to selfie mode, along with a series of other direct commands.
DJI OM 5 Keeps up with the action
ActiveTrack, although not new, has been enhanced and is an impressive feature that hands over the directional control of the gimbal to the Mimo app. It essentially enables you to track a subject by selecting them in the live video preview.
ActiveTrack 4.0 has been greatly enhanced, working at up to 3x zoom at 5 m/s. This means that it locks on target more robustly than previous versions, which is great if you are filming friends or your kids running around in what’s left of the summer.
Gesture Control is a feature that we increasingly see in the latest devices and, to some extent, seems to be taking over from voice control. Give the OM 5 a quick, polite hand gesture and it will start recording, set the self-timer along with multiple other functions.
DynamicZoom is a pre-programmed cinematic effect that essentially mimics Dolly Zoom. This difficult-to-master effect is now ready and available to use with one touch of a button.
Timelapse, Motionlapse, Hyperlapse have become increasingly popular, and these are all now built-in shooting modes.
If you want to get creative with your photography, pop the OM 5 down and select the Panorama mode. You have three options, including 3×3 panorama, 240°panorama and “CloneMe” panorama, which enables the user to appear in the shot several times.
Spin Shot Gimbal Movement is a feature that we’re increasingly seeing on all sorts of video and essentially spins the camera, or phone in this case.
Story Mode Templates enable you to select from a series of templates and guide you through the shot process while adding effects. It’s a neat mode for quickly creating social media content.
Want to look better than life? Then the Glamour Effects mode applies automatic retouching and customised parameter settings.
