Canon to shift focus from DSLRs to mirrorless cameras

News

Canon will shift its product development focus from DSLRs to mirrorless cameras, according to a new report by Nikkei.

While Canon was initially hesitant about entering the mirrorless market for fear of cannibalising its DSLR camera sales, Nikkei says Canon has now decided it must ‘actively roll out products for a growth market even if there is some cannibalisation.”

The Nikkei article quotes Canon’s marketing chief, Masahiro Sakata, who talks about a new entry-level mirrorless camera – which must be the Canon EOS M50 – that it expects to serve as a ‘strategic model’ that will draw interest from families and mothers of young children.

Despite being a latecomer to the mirrorless camera market, with the first EOS M launched back in 2012, Canon claimed a respectable quarter share of the market in 2017, which was good enough to place second behind Olympus.
