Canon RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM Review: First Look

Canon RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM Review
Review

The Canon RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM is a full-frame lens that’s designed for use on the company’s full-frame mirrorless cameras like the EOS R and EOS RP.

A focal length range of 24-240mm is very attractive for a range of shooting opportunities. The 24mm end is useful for street, landscape and interior photography, while the long end is handy for sport, wildlife and capturing distant objects. Then the range in-between is useful for all manner of situations, including portraits and candid photography.

Key Features

  • Focal length: 24-240mm
  • Stabilisation: 5 Stop IS with Dynamic IS
  • Special elements: Aspheric and Ultra-Dispersal Lens Elements and Super Spectra Coating
  • Aperture: Circular 7-Bladed f/4-6.3 Aperture
  • Focusing system: Nano USM Autofocus
  • Switchable Focus/Control Ring
  • Built-in DLO Profile and Electronic Distortion Correction

Build and Handling

We tend to think of travel-zoom lenses being a bit ‘low-end’, but the Canon RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM feels anything but. It weighs 750g, which feels just about right for its size. The knurled focus/control ring  also has a high-quality feel with lovely tension.

Meanwhile, the lockable zoom ring rotates through 100-degrees, so you can zoom quickly from one end of the focal length range to the other.

Early Verdict

Although I’ve been able to shoot with the Canon RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM, it was an early sample and I’m not able to share any images here. However, I’m impressed with the build quality of the lens. It feels like a decent quality optic, and the results I saw on the back of the camera looked to match.

I’ll update this first look-review once I’ve been able to examine some images.
