News

Canon has launched two new Super 35mm lenses, the CN-E14-35mm T1.7 L S/SP and CN-E31.5-95mm T1.7 L S/SP, designed to enhance the company’s Flex Zoom line-up. These lenses offer photographers and videographers a powerful cinematic imagery and versatile design for creative workflows.

The CN-E14-35mm T1.7 L S/SP lens is a wide-angle 14-35mm zoom lens, while the CN-E31.5-95mm T1.7 L S/SP lens is a mid-focal range lens with a 31.5-95mm zoom range. Both lenses offer a fast constant aperture of T1.7, which creates an incredibly shallow depth of field, ensuring that the subject stands out while enhancing compatibility with fast prime lenses when used together in the same production.

These lenses also cover the most frequently used focal lengths in cinema production, offering high optical performance to create sharp, consistent images for 4K and 8K capture. They feature 11 Iris blades that produce a beautiful bokeh effect and softly diffused light. Thanks to Canon’s heritage and colour science, they offer warm colours and true-to-life skin tone reproduction.

The CN-E14-35mm T1.7 L S/SP and CN-E31.5-95mm T1.7 L S/SP lenses are also designed to be versatile and flexible, with an interchangeable mount design that enables the lens to be switched between EF and PL mounts. These lenses are also the first in Canon’s cinema range to use Canon’s interchangeable relay kit, allowing them to switch from Super 35mm to Full Frame and back again at any Canon authorised service centre.

The CN-E14-35mm T1.7 L S/SP and CN-E31.5-95mm T1.7 L S/SP lenses are also lightweight and compact, weighing just 3.3kg and 3.5kg, respectively. This makes them perfect for versatile shooting or tight filming environments.

Additionally, both lenses support efficient lens metadata workflows, including Cooke /i Technology and ZEISS eXtended Data via PL mount, alongside 4-pin Lemo connectivity. This is invaluable for virtual productions, where positional information is needed to ensure virtual backgrounds react as a natural background to the camera’s perspective and post-production VFX workflows.

Furthermore, electronic lens communication with chromatic aberration, peripheral illumination correction, and a Dual Pixel Focus Guide for manual focus assist via EF mount are available when used with compatible cameras.

If you’re interested in purchasing the CN-E14-35mm T1.7 L S/SP and CN-E31.5-95mm T1.7 L S/SP lenses, they are also available on the Canon website and through authorised Canon dealers and retailers.

Canon has also released firmware updates for its Cinema EOS cameras, including the EOS R5 C, EOS C70, EOS C300 Mark III, and EOS C500 Mark II cameras. These updates further enhance and expand the capabilities of the cameras, including a high-resolution Clear Scan function, offering a more concise range from 50 to 250Hz, and providing greater synchronisation support when shooting LED screens on virtual productions.

Canon has also added an option to change the in-camera waveform monitor size and further metadata support for the latest Canon lenses. Improvements to the EOS R5 C include support for the EF-EOS R 0.71x Mount Adapter, faster switching time between photo and video modes, a power-saving mode, 2x magnification during 8K MP4 recording, and a digital-teleconverter option, which maximises flexibility by providing a quick way to increase the telephoto capability of the lens used.

The firmware updates also provide efficient lens metadata workflows, including Cooke/i Technology and ZEISS eXtended Data via PL mount, 4-pin Lemo connectivity, and Dual Pixel Focus Guide for manual focus assist via EF mount when used with compatible cameras.

In summary, Canon has released two new Super 35mm lenses that offer powerful cinematic imagery and versatile design for creative workflows. These lenses feature a fast constant aperture of T1.7, interchangeable mount design, and support for efficient lens metadata workflows.
