Canon has announced a new compact full-frame mirrorless camera, introducing the 26.2-megapixel Canon EOS RP, price tag starting at £1,399.99/€1,629.99.

The Canon EOS RP is aimed at advanced amateurs who like to shoot travel, landscape and portrait photography, as well as videography. The new Canon full-frame mirrorless camera sits below the EOS 6D Mark II in Canon’s range of full-frame cameras and is Canon’s smallest and lightest full-frame camera to date at just 485g.

Canon EOS RP Specs

Inside the Canon EOS RP is a 26.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor which Canon says is similar to that of the EOS 6D Mark II, with some slight modifications to its architecture.

The EOS RP offers a maximum native sensitivity of ISO 40,000, which can be expanded up to ISO 102,400. Also on board is Canon’s DIGIC 8 processor and its Dual Pixel CMOS AF system that enables users to shoot in low light down to -5EV.

Canon is also promising the world’s fastest AF speed of just 0.05sec to go along with the EOS RP’s 4,779 AF position.

The Canon EOS RP offers the latest generation CR3 14-bit raw file format, alongside a compact RAW option to save approximately 40 per cent on the file size of standard RAW files. This increases the number of images that can be stored on a memory card whilst retaining the flexibility of shooting with raw.

Other features include a continuous shooting rate of up to 5fps, or 4fps with Servo AF, as well as a UHS-II card slot offering an unlimited buffer when shooting JPEG or raw files.

Like the EOS R, there’s a 7.5cm Vari-angle touchscreen, as well as a 2.36-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder.

Images can also be processed in-camera on the EOS RP using Canon’s Creative Assist tool, allowing you to apply filters and share directly via the EOS RP’s built-in WiFi and Bluetooth.

Canon EOS RP Video

The Canon EOS RP can record video in 4K resolution at 25fps, or in Full HD at 60fps. There’s also a built-in 4K time-lapse mode and an interval timer.

There’s also Movie Servo AF and HDR movie modes, while Movie Digital IS provides 5-axis stabilisation to counteract shake when filming handheld.

Other video features include microphone and headphone jacks, while a new Video Snapshot function combines 4, 6 or 8sec clips to create a digest of memorable events from a journey or shoot.

The Canon EOS RP release date will be 27 February 2019. The Canon EOS RP price tag will start at £1,399.99/€1,629.99 for the camera body only plus the EF-EOS R Mount Adapter.
