Canon has announced the Canon EOS R6 Mark II – price tag from £2,779.99 / €3,149.99 – boasting a newly designed sensor, 4K UHD video capability and up to 40fps burst shooting.

The new Canon camera is the latest addition to the mirrorless EOS R system and is a replacement to the full-frame Canon EOS R6, which was launched in 2020.

The new EOS R6 Mark II builds on the success of the original, adding improved video capabilities, burst shooting speed, among other performance enhancements.

Inside the Canon EOS R6 Mark II is a new 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor paired with Canon’s latest DIGIC X processing engine. The new Canon camera also supports Dual Pixel CMOS AF II.

Continuous shooting

Thanks to this technology, the R6 Mark II is the Canon’s fastest EOS camera to date, with continuous shooting speeds of up to 40fps with its electronic shutter and 12fps with its mechanical shutter. What’s more, Canon says the new sensor design helps reduce rolling shutter, allowing you to better freeze fast-moving subjects with the electronic shutter.

The EOS R6 Mark II also boasts a RAW Burst mode that starts recording action a half-second before the action starts. Designed for photographers shooting unpredictable subjects, such as sport or wildlife, RAW Burst mode will enable the R6 Mark II to shoot continuously at 30fps for up to 191 frame, all with AF tracking and recording every mage in a single CR3 file. You can then extract a single frame from this file either in-camera or within Canon’s DPP software, and save it as a JPEG, HEIF or Raw file.

IBIS

Like other recent EOS R system cameras, the EOS R6 Mark II uses in-body image stabilisation (IBIS) which, when combined with optical IS from Canon’s RF lenses can provide up to 8 stops of stabilisation.

Canon says the EOS R6 Mark II can be used handheld for shake-free shots in light levels as low as -6.5EV. The camera also offers a maximum native ISO of 102,400.

Video

Like many recent EOS R system cameras, the Canon EOS R6 Mark II is built for hybrid shooting. It can record 4K at 60p UHD with Dual Pixel CMOS AF II focusing. Its 4K footage is created by oversampling the sensor’s 6K output.

Users can also record 6K Raw footage when using an Atomos Ninja V+ recorder via the camera’s HDMI output.

Canon says it has improved the camera’s circuit design, enabling longer recording times. With the EOS R6 Mark II Canon says you can shoot 40 minutes of oversampled 4K video at 60p or up to six hours when filming in 4K at 30p. The maximum recording time was 30 minutes with the original EOS R6.

Pre-recording is also available in video mode. When activated, the EOS R6 Mark II will record up to 5secs before you press the record button so that you don’t miss any moments.

Other video options include Canon Log 3, focus breathing correction and a slow motion mode that captures footage in Full HD at up to 17982fps.

Connectivity

Canon has updated the R6 Mark II’s Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, allowing you to not only connect the camera to your smart device but to share files via ftp/ftps/sftp. You can also remotely control the R6 Mark II via Canon’s updated Camera Connect and EOS Utility apps, or use it as a webcam.
