Canon EOS R100 price, specs announced

News

Canon has announced the Canon EOS R100 which is set to go on sale in June for £669.99 / €769.99 with the RF-S 18-45mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM lens. It’s aimed at families and novice photographers looking to step up from using a mobile phone for shooting images and video.

The Canon EOS R100 has a 24.1MP APS-C format sensor paired with Canon’s Digic 8 processing engine which together enable the standard sensitivity settings up to ISO 12,800. Meanwhile, the maximum continuous shooting rate is 3.5 frames per second (fps) with continuous focusing and 6.5 fps in single AF mode.

As the R100’s sensor supports Dual Pixel CMOS AF, it can use phase detection focusing.

Canon has given the R100 the usual program, shutter priority, aperture priority and manual exposure modes along with scene, Auto+, Creative Filter and Creative Assist modes for inexperienced photographers. Hybrid Auto mode is also on hand to record 2-4 second clips of video with every still. These clips can then be combined in-camera to create a movie.

Naturally, the Canon R100 can record 4K movies, but only up to 25p and there’s a 1.55x (64%) crop applied. Full HD movies can be shot at up to 120p.

The Canon R100 weighs 356g and has a fixed (rather than tilting) 1.04-million-dot screen that isn’t touch-sensitive. There’s also a 2.36-million-dot electronic viewfinder with a refresh rate of 60fps.

By default, the Canon R100 displays its Guided User Interface (UI) and Mode Guide, which makes it easier for beginner photographers to get started. However, the UI can be switched to Advanced mode and the Guide can be turned off when users become more familiar with their camera and photography in general.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity are onboard and the Canon R100 is compatible with the Canon Camera Connect app for smart devices to give remote control, easy image sharing and firmware updates without using a computer.

Canon RF 28mm F2.8 STM

Canon has also announced the RF 28mm F2.8 STM, a full-frame wide-angle prime lens for its R-series mirrorless cameras.

Aimed at enthusiast photographers, the RF 28mm F2.8 STM sits alongside the RF16mm F2.8 STM, RF 24mm f1.8 IS Macro, RF 35mm f1.8 IS Macro, RF 50mm F1.8 STM, RF 85mm f2 Macro IS STM, RF 600mm F11 IS STM and RF 800mm F11 IS STM.

It’s intended for travel, street and everyday use and could make a good partner for vlogging with the Canon R50 as it weighs just 120g and is only 24.7mm long.

The Canon RF 28mm F2.8 STM has a 7-blade aperture, accepts 55mm filters and features a combined focus and control ring.

The Canon RF 28mm F2.8 STM, price £344.99 / €389.99, is set to go on sale in June.

Canon OC-E4 Camera Shoe cord

In addition to the R100 and RF 28mm F2.8 STM, Canon has announced the Canon OC-E4 Camera Shoe cord, price £229.99 / €259.99 for Canon cameras with the multi-function hot shoe. The 80cm OC-E4 cable enables compatible flashguns to be connected to cameras such as the Canon R3, R5, R6 II, R8, R7 and R50, and used off-camera. It can also be used to connect other accessories such as the Tascam XLR Microphone Adapter.
