Canon has announced the Canon EOS 850D – also known in the US as the EOS Revel T8i – with a price tag of £819.99 / €989.99. The new 24.1MP compact DLSR is aimed at enthusiast photographers.

And while the camera might be small, it does pack in some serious firepower with the processing coming from Canon’s own DIGIC 8 processor.

This is coupled with a 24.1-megapixel dual pixel CMOS APS-C sensor that not only shoots high-resolution images but is also capable of capturing 4K video.

Canon EOS 850D / Rebel T8i specs

  • 24.1 Megapixel Dual Pixel CMOS APS-C Sensor
  • 7fps continuous shooting rate
  • 4K (contrast AF) 24p/25p
  • Full HD with Dual Pixel CMOS AF up to 60p
  • 45 AF point system
  • 220,000 Pixel RGB+IR Metering Sensor with Flicker Detection (same as 90D)
  • Intelligent Tracking (iTR) AF
  • Eye Detection AF (With Tracking)
  • DIGIC 8 Image Processor

One of the big selling points of the Canon EOS 850D is that it’s part of the EOS EF family and uses the EF or EF-S lens range. This range of lenses is one of the most extensive and respected in the camera industry, giving 850D users a huge choice.

Being a true DLSR, there’s a hotshoe for full TTL flash control, either manual or fully automatic. Videographers can make use of the 3.5mm external mic port.

The new camera will ship with the EF-S 18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM kit lens, this has been a long-standing partnership for cameras at the level and is a great all-rounder.

For such a small camera, there are plenty of advanced features with the EOS 850D equipped with Intelligent Tracking (iTR) automatic focus (AF).

This high impact AF is made possible by the 220,000 Pixel RGB+IR metering sensor. By exchanging high-resolution automatic exposure data with the AF sensor, the iTR automatic focus provides high-speed responsiveness and accuracy, ideal for capturing sport and wildlife photography.

As well as being great for wildlife, this advanced AF is ideal for automatic face tracking through the optical viewfinder.

As ever when it comes to complete control, the EOS 850D / Rebel T8i delivers, with full manual as well as automatic control. The design of the camera echos features from the professional cameras with dual dials for fast aperture and shutter settings adjustment when needed.
