Canon has replaced the EOS 6D, introducing the new Canon EOS 6D Mark II – price tag 1,999.99 / €2,499.99 – which boasts a 26.2-megapixel CMOS sensor and the first articulated touchscreen LCD on a Canon full-frame camera.
The Canon EOS 6D Mark II is a replacement for the EOS 6D and follows months of speculation about its arrival. Its new 26.2-megapixel full-frame sensor is combined with Canon’s new DIGIC 7 processor, which the company says is 14x faster than its DIGIC 6 predecessor.
What’s more, the DIGIC 7 processing engine enables the EOS 6D Mark II to achieve a native sensitivity range of ISO 100 to 40,000, which is expandable down to ISO 50 and up to 102,400.
Canon says the EOS 6D Mark II is the world’s lightest full-frame camera, and it’s also the company’s first full-frame model to feature a vari-angle LCD with touchscreen capability.
Other improvements include a faster burst mode, which sees the Canon 6D Mark II increase to 6.5fps over 4.5fps in the Mark I.
The Canon EOS 6D Mark II also boasts a 45-point AF system, all of which are the more sensitive cross-type AF points. The original EOS 6D offered an 11-point AF system with just one cross-type AF point.
Canon says the EOS 6D Mark II is targeted squarely at enthusiasts. When introducing the new camera at a launch event in London last week, the company told journalists that when the EOS 6D – the new camera’s predecessor – was launched, Canon sent a survey out to those who purchased it and found that most of those who made the step up into what was then, in 2012, the first so-called ‘entry-level’ full-frame camera, did so because they wanted the better image quality.
Canon says it believes even more people are looking to make the step up now than there were back then.
To appeal to these photographers and ease their transition into full-frame, Canon says it has kept the 6D Mark II’s buttons in a similar layout and added the vari-angle screen to keep its operability similar to the EOS 77D and 800D further down the range.
Other features in the EOS 6D Mark II include Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology and built-in 5-axis movie stabilisation that counteracts shake when footage is captured hand-held and on-the-move.
The EOS 6D Mark II is the first Canon camera to offer both 4K time lapse movie mode and an intervalometer. You’ll also find built-in GPS for adding locations to your images.
Design-wise, the Canon EOS 6D Mark II is dust- and moisture-resistant, and there is a new button on the front of the camera to change the AF mode.
