The winners of the 2018 UK All Party Parliamentary Photography Exhibition were announced during a ceremony hosted by Nikon at the Palaces of Westminster on Monday.

In a victory for the House of Lords, Lord Greenway, Baroness Floella Benjamin, Lord Birt and Lord Crathorne were named as the photographers of four of the five winning images. Sir David Amess was the only representative from the House of Commons to see his image amongst the winners.

Lord Greenway was also revealed to be the overall winner with his image of a tugboat alongside a towering ship.

The competition, which has been running for 20 years, is open to serving MPs and members of the House of Lords. Only the best images made it into the exhibition and it proved to be an interesting collection of images.

As a former judge of the competition, I think the standard has taken a significant step up.

The Judges

This years panel of judges, chaired by Professor Dr Michael Maloney OBE, with Nigel Atherton, the Editor of Amateur Photographer Magazine, and John Walshe, Vice President of Nikon Europe, had an unenviable task in deciding the winners. It was clear from the banter in the room that the rivalry between politicians extends to photography.

Mike Malone gave an enjoyable critique of the images in the exhibition

Commenting on the competition John Walshe said, “Nikon is delighted to have supported the 2018 All Party Parliamentary Photography competition and exhibition. I think all of us know the incredible abilities of everyone within Westminster to be able to present and interpret events from a different perspective and it’s great to see that they have been able to apply the same skills within a photographic  context to produce some incredibly creative images.”

The winning and shortlisted images are on display at the Houses of Parliament from Monday 2nd July 2018. The photographer of each winning entry received £100 as a donation from Nikon to a charity of their choice.
