Adobe has announced the latest update to its Elements range, introducing Photoshop Elements 2018 and Premiere Elements 2018, which it says are driven by new artificial intelligence capabilities.
The software, available for Mac and Windows, is headlined by new advanced algorithms Adobe has developed that enable Elements 2018 to analyse your image or video and determine the best edits to make.
A new Auto Curate tool will also analyse a large batch of images – say your shots from a weekend away shooting – based on criteria such as image quality, faces and more and filter the ones it deems are most important to you.
For instance, Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018 can recognise familiar faces based on their prevalence in your archive and automatically curate these.
Both Photoshop Elements 2018 and Premiere Elements 2018 employ a similar technology for creating slideshows of your images and video.
Open Closed Eyes
What’s more, there are a range of new one-click edits such as Open Closed Eyes that does exactly what it says on the tin.
How it works is, when you open your portrait where the subject has closed eyes and select the Open Closed Eyes tool, Elements 2018 will analyse the subject’s face and present a selection of similar eye and face combinations. Click the one that looks most suitable, and Elements 2018 will blend the eyes into your portrait.
A Whiten Teeth tool employs similar technology.
Adobe has also made it easier for Photoshop Elements 2018 users to remove a subject from an unwanted background, which now uses object detection rather that colour and edge detection to automatically select a person (or other object) you want to cut out.
Swap Backgrounds makes changing your image’s background achievable in just a few clicks.
You’ll also find four new Guided Edits that help you replace backgrounds, make double exposures, add shape overlays and create watercolour effects.
New to Premiere Elements 2018 is an interesting feature called Candid Moments for extracting a still image from your video footage.
Meanwhile, a new Smart Trim tool uses AI to determine which clips to edit out of your videos. You’ll also find a new Guided Edits for bounce-back effects and freeze frames.

Both Photoshop Elements 2018 and Premiere Elements 2018 will be priced $99, or $79.99 as an upgrade for existing users of the software.
You can also buy both software as a bundle for $149.99.
