Review

The 3 Legged Thing Iggy is a mini tripod design to hold traditional cameras, smartphones, GoPro cameras, microphones and other accessories.

Priced at £19.99/$22.99, the Iggy is made of ABS plastic and features an adjustable ball head with a 1/4”-20 screw mount. The 3LT Iggy stands 14cm / 5.5-inches tall when open and its legs can be folded up into a selfie stick/grip.

With the price tag you get a GoPro mount, or you can pay £24.99 / $27.99 for a kit containing the Iggy, the GoPro mount and a Cradle phone holder. The Cradle is also available buy standalone at £9.99/$12.99.

Build Quality

The 3LT Iggy is made of plastic, but it’s a very robust material. A mini tripod is a pretty simple, straightforward tool, but the Iggy has some design features within that simplicity that really stood out for me.

First, the screw mount. On other mini tripods, like the Manfrotto PIXI, you need to twist the tripod round clockwise to screw it into your camera. The Iggy has a thumbwheel around the screw mount. Simply scroll this with a flick of your thumb to secure your camera to the tripod. Very easy.

And rather than a button, the ball head is released via a twist ring, which is a lot easier and quicker to do one-handed.

Lastly, the shape of the legs is designed so that when folded, the Iggy does become a natural selfie stick that fits snugly in your hand.

Overall, I was very impressed with the design of the Iggy. The build is robust, it’s not going to tip over and it’s very quick to set up.

Performance

I used the Iggy in a wide range of situations. I set it up on the crest of a waterfall with my GoPro Fusion mounted on top and it stood firm. I’ve used it on the floor of a busy trade show, in a chicken coop, on my roof, and I’ve used it as a grip for filming video.

The Iggy is a great mini tripod on its own thanks to those design features I mentioned above, but the addition of the Cradle and GoPro mounts make it incredibly versatile.

I’m often switching between different cameras and devices, and having the flexibility to swap different mounts for each device allows me to work that much quicker.

The GoPro mount screws through the rings of your camera or cage just like all of your other GoPro accessories and keeps the camera secure in its place, with no drifting.

Likewise, the phone Cradle holds your phone securely. I was using a Huawei Mate 10 Pro, which has a 6-inch display, and the Iggy was able to hold it stable while I filmed video. You can also bend the Cradle for filming in both landscape and portrait format.

Verdict

Let’s get down to brass tacks: the 3 Legged Thing Iggy has become one of the most useful – and frequently used – items in my kit bag, and it costs less than £20. The combo kit is worth it for the Cradle and GoPro mounts alone, which you can use on the Iggy or screw onto a larger tripod should you need to.

Pair that with solid build quality and some nice design features, the Iggy really is a must-have item for those photographers who like to dabble in a little bit of everything.
