Leica has expanded its family of M rangefinder cameras, announcing the Leica M-D.

The fifth camera in Leica’s M range, the Leica M-D joins the Leica M and M-P (Typ 240), Leica M (tip 262) and the M Monochrom (Typ 246).

In an unusual twist, Leica has given the M-D’s body a stripped back, minimalist design with the back of the camera consisting solely of its ISO sensitivity dial. In fact, the Leica M-D on the whole offers a range of features, shunning all but the most vital functionality.

Photographers will have access to the key exposure controls of shutter speed, aperture, distance and ISO sensitivity on the Leica M-D, which the company says is intended to focus the photographer on the picture they are taking and bring back some of the anticipation of discovering your results later like photographers did in the past when shooting film.

The Leica M-D does not record video, nor does it offer Live View functionality. Inside it boasts a 24-megapixel CMOS full-frame sensor and Leica’s Maestro processor. The camera also captures exposures exclusively as raw data in DNG format, and it boasts what Leica says is a ‘barely audible’ shutter sound.

Available in black paint finish, the Leica M-D price tag will be £4,650 upon its release date of May 2016.
