10 Nikon D5 cameras to reach International Space Station today

News

Earlier this year NASA made headlines on websites like ours by purchasing 53 Nikon D5 DSLR cameras that the space agency said it would use both for training purposes here on Earth and with its astronauts on the International Space Station.

Today the first batch of those Nikon D5 cameras is set to reach the ISS.

The Nikon D5 cameras are travelling aboard the Orbital ATK OA-8 Space Station Cargo Resupply Mission, which left Earth on Sunday at 7:19am EST.

Nikon tells DPReview that it will be reusing the the lenses and accessories it purchased previous with its past fleet of Nikon D4 and D2XS cameras.

Nikon adds that it expects its D5 stock to be used on the ISS for 12-18 months.

Given this time frame, we can’t help but wonder… does this mean we’ll see a replacement for the Nikon D5 in the next 12-18 months?
